- October 2000–September 2002 | Visiting professor / JAERI Research Fellow, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute.
- Research on internal transport barriers and pedestal physics on EAST, and participation in CFETR physics design and advanced operating scenarios.

- 2010–2013 | Chief Scientist, Ministry of Science and Technology ITER-related project on fundamental ITPA physics issues.
- 2014–2018 | Chief Scientist, ITER-related project on achieving long-pulse H-mode and its underlying mechanisms.
- 2022–2027 | Leads the study of pedestal physics and mechanisms for forming and sustaining internal transport barriers within an ITER-related programme on high-poloidal-beta plasma physics.
Research output and supervision
- The supplied 2026 CV reports 371 publications, including 71 in Nuclear Fusion, and 4,126 citations.
- Supervised more than 30 master’s graduates and more than 50 doctoral graduates. A supervised doctoral graduate received the Cai Shidong Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award in Plasma Physics in 2022.
- 2011–2026 | Scientific committee member, Asia-Pacific Transport Working Group meeting (APTWG); scientific committee member of the International H-mode Physics and Transport Barriers Workshop since 2015.
