Liu Haiqing, Researcher

Researcher and Doctoral Supervisor, Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Distinguished Professor, ShanghaiTech University

Born in 1977, he received his Ph.D. from Kyushu University, Japan, in 2011 and has worked in the Tokamak Physics Experiment Division of the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, since 2001. He has long been engaged in far-infrared/terahertz diagnostics of controlled nuclear fusion plasmas and in research on core confinement and transport physics, with deep involvement in the development and engineering practice of diagnostic systems for major science facilities such as the EAST fully superconducting tokamak. He is one of the company's two chief scientists.

  • CAS Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Award (2018)
  • Anhui Province Youth Science and Technology Award (2016)
  • Chair, ITPA Laser Diagnostics Expert Group
  • 100+ SCI papers
  • 10+ patents / software copyrights

Research Focus

His work focuses on plasma far-infrared laser polarimeter-interferometer diagnostics and on the core confinement and transport physics of tokamaks. His research spans internal transport barrier (ITB) physics, current transport, core particle transport, electron density behavior, the density limit, operating regimes and plasma turbulence. His current priorities are the EAST plasma far-infrared laser polarimeter-interferometer diagnostics and core physics experiments.

Major Achievements & Academic Appointments

  • Led and completed multiple projects, including a National Magnetic Confinement Fusion Energy Development Research Special Program and General Programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
  • Published more than one hundred SCI-indexed papers and holds over ten invention patents, utility-model patents and software copyrights.
  • Serves as Chair of the Laser Diagnostics Expert Group of the International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) and as a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Laser-Aided Plasma Diagnostics.
